Two years go our company made the strategic decision to repatriate manufacturing to Canada. Despite the hurdles presented by Covid and the disruptions caused to smooth flowing operations, we successfully completed our first phase in late 2020. We made this decision for a variety of reasons;
Bringing jobs to Canada, shortening our supply chain to reduce our carbon footprint, and increasing our efficiency at new product development were just a few of the reasons we considered before making this change.
Did we expect our product to cost less to be manufactured here? No. At least not on a “cost per part”basis. Has our overall cost increased? Somewhat surprisingly, no. In fact, the financial benefits in cash flow management and increased inventory turns require less operating capital due to shortened lead times.
Decades ago, many, if not most, products sold in North America were made in North America. Beginning in the 1980’s companies began transferring their production to countries where the labor rates were so low, North American manufacturers could not compete on a global scale.
The decision to “outsource” was purely a cost saving decision. Those cost savings today are either shrinking or disappearing entirely.
Wages in these countries, while still way below North American levels are rising. And with energy costs spiralling just the cost of transporting product to North America alone has increased 6-fold in 2 years, with no indication that costs will ever come down. Almost 25% of the cost of our product was spent on
non-value-added services like transportation and brokerage fees, resulting in no benefits to our customers.
We hear a great deal about “supply chain” issues but how do those issues translate into something that will affect you, the individual consumer? Taking produce as an example; there are labor shortages in planting crops, labor shortages in harvesting the crops, labor shortages in the trucking sector making it
difficult and expensive to transport the crops to a port, a shortage of cargo ships has resulted in an explosion in cost and often containers are not loaded onto ships for days. Ports in North America are facing 4 week backlogs just to unload a container.
The labor shortage in trucking within North America adds even more delays. Adding all these conditions together can result in a delay of 10 weeks or more
between the harvest of produce and the retail sale of it. Produce is being wasted at record levels because they can’t get it to consumers fast enough, and most of the food tech industry agree this is not a problem that will go away soon.
Now couple the supply chain issues with a societal change in how we perceive food and the disconnect grows even more. Consumers are demanding, and are willing to put in the effort, to get quality food of high nutritional content, free of hidden pesticides and herbicides, reduce their household food waste,
